Last month I spent 10 days off social media and I felt so empowered and reconnected to my life that I felt like I should share some of the things that I went through during the detox and some of the tricks that I used to stay off of social and reconnect to my life.
I found myself always checking and double tapping Instagram that I wasn’t even thinking about what I was looking at and/or wasting minutes doing. I go to sleep check Instagram and snap chat. Wake up check Instagram and snapchat. Go on a date check Instagram and snapchat. I was so annoying to myself. I felt like I was wasting precious moments on my phone stalking Adrienna from Bolivia traveling with her husband to the Maldives who I will never meet and frankly wasn’t spending enough time connecting to my fabulous friends and neighbors in my day to day life. I needed to make a change…So I did 10 days no social media #LEZZGO
Step One: Delete all social media off of phone and disconnect cellular data to safari or any website that can lead you to the gram, snap, whatever you logon. Even Facebook counts. Its 10 days…If someone is that desperate to contact you they should have your phone number or email and they will reach out. CUT TIES. COLD TURKEY.
Days 1-3 suck. You constantly tapping on your phone where the app used to be, or trying to logon to safari and your phone wont let you. Its weird but you realize how often you really do check these apps on your phone with actually thinking about why you are checking the app. After you get over the upset that you cannot check the app you get over it and listen to a podcast, check your email or pay attention to the current moment. Like you may be driving…keep your eyes on the road crazy.
Days 3-7 youre kinda ovs. By this point its been a week and your done with the mindless tapping and you’ve actually opened a book, watched a new show called Grand Designs (OBSESSED) on Netflix, hungout with friends without having to take a picture with eachother…you can do things without posting them on social…its mind blowing… And I mean your ready to see the latest scoop but you feel more in control of your phone use.
Days 7-10 I just went to bed without my phone near my pillow. This was kind of the most fulfilling part. On day 9 I went to bed with my phone on my desk way further than an arms distance away and I didn’t even think about it. I even forgot to bring my phone with me to work in the morning. I survived. I still woke up to my alarm. I still made it to work without my GPS…the world didn’t end and I was present and in the moment. It was pretty awesome!
I loved my social media detox. I drank wine with friends, ate cheese and chocolate and gained even more enjoyment from each experience. It was truly the other day I hiked Runyon without any music or headphones. FREAK! I found listening to the sounds of the city, the birds and the wind wind was like an LA love song and I even said hi to fellow hikers as they walked by. New woman! I am present and comfortable without being on my phone and it really only took 10 days of conscious effort to make an impact on my phone use. It really is true as my girl Marie Forleo ( https://www.marieforleo.com/) said “Limited choices in your day can lead to limitless freedom in your life.” I felt free after the 10 days of social media detox and after the initial excitement of checking in on what my favorite people were up to and uploading a new hot pic that my friend Danny took of me I got off my phone, called up a friend and caught up in real life. My social media detox brought me back to reality and made me more present in my daily life. Cheers to waking up, and feeling free in our beautiful lives.
PS Let me know if you’ve tried any detox and lets try another one together
